  Erin Polowin

The road to world travel begins with inspiration and a trusted guide. Erin Polowin found hers within the Trent community and is now embarking on a new life in Wuhan, China.

After participating in a high school trip to commemorate the 65th anniversary of VE Day in Europe, Ms. Polowin knew she was destined to learn, work and travel abroad. She nurtured this ambition during the first two years of her joint Sociology and History degree with Emphasis in Teacher Education at Trent by attending many information sessions offered by the University.

“I learned that studying abroad was a real possibility for me,” stated Ms. Polowin.

In turn Ms. Polowin was thrilled to find herself studying within the Sociology department at England’s Lancaster University during her third year.

“It is safe to say that my study abroad year was one of my most memorable years of University,” stated Ms. Polowin. “Moving to England forced me to step outside of my comfort zone. I learned to navigate a new university, city, and country. I made life-long friends and traveled to many new places. Through this experience I knew that I wanted to teach internationally.”

Afterward she undertook workshops and logged many volunteer hours to complete her undergraduate degree with specialization in Primary/Junior grades in 2014. She subsequently returned to Trent to earn her Bachelor of Education in June 2015.

“I decided to stay at Trent because I honestly love the University,” she said.

The journey to teaching social studies to secondary students in China began after meeting with recruiters from Maple Leaf Educational Schools, an established Canadian curriculum school network, at a job fair for Trent’s Education students.

“They told me of many available teaching opportunities in China,” recalls Ms. Polowin. “China needs Canadian teachers and I was eager to get into my job field and have my own classroom.”

Now established in Wuhan, Ms. Polowin is taking pride in her work.

“It is so rewarding to see how eager the students are to learn with their Canadian teachers,” said Ms. Polowin. “They greet you every day with a big smile.”

Incidentally upon arriving in China Ms. Polowin chose to live with Sarah Hughes, a fellow graduate of Trent’s Education program who also loves teaching and travel.

Ms. Polowin is continuing a familial commitment to international education. Her grandmother who was involved with the Trent International Program hosted many exchange students.

“My family formed special relationships with these students,” said Ms. Polowin. “This developed my desire to see where they came from and began a tradition of studying at Trent.”

As for those following in her footsteps she says, “Do your research. There are a lot of companies who are looking for Canadian teachers to teach abroad. Many people at Trent can give you advice.”

She hopes to incorporate her international experiences into her own Canadian classroom one day.
